The activity explores history, community and aspects of society through letter writing. The pupils are invited to write a letter to someone from the past, thinking about what they would like to tell someone from the past about their lives and what they would like to ask them in return. Follow-up activities include linking letter‑writing to exploring specific topics and areas of the curriculum such as describing objects, eg smartphones, or words, eg. climate emergency.
There are 2 strands to this activity:
- Option 1 – Write a letter to an inhabitant from an Iron Age village (inspired by the Daisy Discovers Sharing) video.
- Option 2 – Write a letter to your ancestor inspired by investigation within your own family.

Sandra Gustafsson is a Cardiff-based theatre designer and workshop facilitator. Since moving to Wales in 2016 to pursue a Masters at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Sandra has found a passion for educational projects and participatory arts. As a result, she has worked as a Creative Practitioner in a number of Primary and Secondary schools across South Wales as part of Arts Council of Wales’ Lead Creative Schools scheme. In addition, Sandra has recently collaborated with Wales Millennium Centre and Sparc Valleys Kids as part of the ‘Together Stronger’ partnership to deliver creative workshops for young people in community settings. Sandra is particularly intrigued by finding new purposes for recycled materials and found objects through creative projects.
