Young Storyteller call out

Are you 16 - 25? Are you fascinated by telling stories? Are you well-connected within your community? Then we have a great opportunity for you.

We want to meet twenty young people from across Wales looking to develop their interviewing and journalistic skills to create what we’re calling an ‘audio portrait’ - a photographic portrait accompanied by a reflective audio interview - of someone in your community.

The audio portraits will be part of an exhibition during our tour of Circle of Fifths, and will have a permanent home on our website.

What is Circle of Fifths?

Circle of Fifths is an immersive theatre experience directed by Butetown film and theatre-maker Gavin Porter. Created with a collective of musicians and artists, and real-life stories from people across Wales, the show combines film, music and theatre to create a live documentary.

Circle of Fifths explores how music and stories can connect us in times of grief and loss - allowing us a moment of collective reflection and celebration.

Circle of Fifths was first performed in June 2022 and returns this October, starting its tour at The Riverfront in Newport.

What you’ll be doing

You'll take part in a workshop day with documentary filmmaker Jay Bedwani and photographer, presenter and TEAM assistant Ellen Thomas, alongside the other young storytellers.

In the morning, you’ll learn about:

  • how Circle of Fifths became a ‘live documentary’

  • holding interviews around sensitive topics and creating a comfortable, conversational atmosphere

  • how photography can aid in the telling of your stories

  • negotiating relationships, i.e. through gaining permissions to use material

  • writing sensitive interview questions

In the afternoon, you’ll:

  • record an audio interview with someone in your area about their relationship to music and memory.
  • work with the photographer to take your interviewee’s portrait before and after their interview

  • choose the stand out moments of the recording to create your story

  • choose which photograph will be displayed with your audio story at the venues where Circle of Fifths is being performed
