About Balloon Girl Ascending
21 – 24 July 2020
“We all have our time machines, don’t we. Those that take us back are memories… And those that carry us forward, are dreams.” – H. G. Wells
This summer, in a parallel world where COVID 19 isn’t our collective reality, we would have been gearing up to present Balloon Girl, a large scale outdoor spectacular in Cardiff. But life took a different turn and we’re not in the version of the future that any of us imagined.
We are still working towards a physical show, in some form, at some point in the future, but in the meantime…
This July marks 124 years since Balloon Girl ascended high above the Cardiff skies at 19.45pm on Tuesday 21st July 1896.
Over the week of 21 – 24 July 2020 we shared, celebrated and remembered her story as we brought moments from the past back to life and imagined our shared future.
Content appeared across Twitter, Instagram and threshold.digital, sharing the events of 1896, reflecting on the current situation and the show that might have been, and looking to the skies and to our hopes for the future.
Balloon Girl Ascending was a digital journal, an experiment – testing the possibilities of storytelling across multiple platforms.
