“Fed up of the polarisation of working-class voices, this is a piece of work born from my love of the Rhondda Valley, and is focused on lifting those voices which are usually lost amongst the noise. It is a large-scale musical with a Brechtian twist. This is a vast and ambitious project and I would like to show the rest of the world that we are capable of such ambition in Wales.”
Angharad Lee was born and bred in Porth, in the Rhondda Valley. An award-winning, bilingual director whose career began as an actress and singer, her practice has been described as urgent and inventive. Her process is accessible, attainable, rigorous and always reliant on a strong partnership and trust between every artist within the room.
As well as being a freelance director she is also AD of Leeway Productions, whose flagship production of The Last 5 Years saw her develop a brand-new theatrical language to critical acclaim with choreographer Mark Smith, and whose 10 minute musicals project has provided a platform for new creative partnerships to flourish across Wales.
She is also a lecturer at UWTSD Cardiff and will be at the helm of the new BA in Musical Theatre which launches in Cardiff in September 2019. She is also passionate about creative learning and embedding creativity across our fabulous curriculum here in Wales.
