National Theatre Wales and Gruff Rhys highlight 2018 track, No Profit in Pain, in an impassioned show of support for NHS in Wales, as the Coronavirus pandemic continues

National Theatre Wales (NTW) and Gruff Rhys are encouraging everyone to stand firm in their support of the NHS this week, coming together to push Gruff’s 2018 song No Profit in Pain back into the spotlight to raise funds for Wales-based NHS charities.  Written and released in 2018, NTW and Gruff Rhys are using the track to keep an impassioned message about the invaluable role of the NHS and its staff centre stage, as the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic continues.

Originally commissioned by NTW as part of the company’s NHS70 Festival, No Profit in Pain was released in 2018; a pop synth ballad marking 70 years of a treasured institution whose roots are firmly planted in Wales. NTW and Gruff Rhys were keen to revisit track as a public show of national pride, support and appreciation for the NHS and its staff and to send a message about the need for continued protection and support for the institution,  channeling all proceeds from downloads to charities who are supporting NHS workers throughout the pandemic.’.

Gruff said “With a pandemic upon us we need to reevaluate how our society is structured, to pay proper respect to our frontline and key workers – they are running the country on our behalf for the good of all, and shame on the divisive profiteers and architects of austerity who have put their lives at risk. ”

NTW’s Artistic Director, Lorne Campbell said, “The message from national government is that things are relaxing – but we’re not out of the woods yet.  Threats to the NHS have been deepening as a result of years of austerity and privatisation focused on profit over public service. The amazing show of public support during this period of lockdown has sent a strong message to those in power. We need to continue to keep this message centre stage, this is why we’re encouraging everyone to download the track today to help support the NHS, and show our gratitude to those key workers who continue to put themselves at risk to look after us and keep us safe.”

No Profit in Pain is now available for download. All proceeds from download sales will go to charities who are supporting NHS workers throughout the pandemic. Download the track here
